Online retailer Amazon.com Wednesday announced it plans to sell digital music in the DRM-free MP3 format. Songs from EMI Music’s Coldplay, Norah Jones amd Joss Stone will be available later this year.

Amazon is the latest retailer to adopt the DRM-free MP3 format. Eliminating DRM, which controls how and where downloaded music can be played, allows songs bought online to be copied and played on any digital music player, Windows or Apple-based. EMI recently agreed to offer DRM-free tunes on Apple’s iTunes.

“Our MP3-only strategy means all the music that customers buy on Amazon is always DRM-free and plays on any device,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO, said in a statement.

For EMI, the agreement provides consumers with more options, as well as a high-profile boost to digital music sales.
